Article: The leather we choose, and why it matters

The leather we choose, and why it matters

The leather we choose, and why it matters

Traceable, LWG Gold-rated leather. Tested for durability. Designed for real dog life. Built to last years, not seasons.

A collar is the one thing your dog wears almost every day. And their lead is the thing you trust when instinct takes over and they suddenly pull toward life. So the material matters more than people realise.

At Chommies, leather is not a styling decision. It’s a performance and responsibility decision, about safety, durability, traceability, and what happens to a product long after it leaves the store.

Most dog accessories today are made from synthetic materials designed for fast production and fast replacement. They look good at first, but over time they crack, weaken, or end up discarded. We chose a different path.

Leather remains one of humanity’s oldest and most proven performance materials because nothing else combines strength, flexibility, repairability, and longevity in quite the same way. A well-made leather collar or lead doesn’t deteriorate with life, it adapts to it.

It softens where your hand holds it. It strengthens through use. It records years of walks, weather, and movement. And crucially, it keeps dogs safe.
Longevity is also one of the most powerful sustainability decisions available: buy less, keep longer, repair when needed.

Our Source
Our leather is sourced from internationally audited tanning facilities operating under some of the strictest global standards.

Leather Working Group (LWG) Gold Rating: the highest certification for environmental performance, water stewardship, chemical management, waste control, and responsible labour practices.

REACH Compliance: meeting rigorous European Union chemical safety regulations protecting animals, people, and ecosystems.

ISO 9001 Certified Quality Management: ensuring consistent material performance through continuous testing and monitoring.

SATRA Technology Accreditation: globally recognised testing for durability, abrasion resistance, and product performance.

Together, these accreditations mean something simple but important: the leather is not only beautiful,  it is accountable and verified. Every hide is traceable through regulated supply chains not linked to irresponsible land conversion or deforestation.

Earlier in our journey, we experimented with more raw, unfinished leathers. While visually expressive, they created inconsistency and reduced durability for highly active dogs. So we refined our approach.

Today we use a locally produced leather finished at 1.8/2.0 mm thickness, a technical balance where strength meets flexibility.

In practice this means:
Greater resistance to moisture and daily wear.
Consistent colour longevity across years of use.
Improved resistance to stretching and friction.
Reliable performance without losing tactile softness.
Leather designed for movement, not display.

The future of sustainability may not lie in constantly inventing new materials. It may lie in using existing materials better,  and keeping products in circulation for decades instead of seasons. Most synthetic collars are replaced every 1–3 years. Well-maintained leather can last 30–50 years or more. The most responsible product is often the one you never need to replace.

How to Care for Your Chommies Leather

Good leather rewards small rituals.

To care for your Chommies leather you need to:
Wipe clean with a damp cloth after muddy walks.
Allow to dry naturally, never on direct heat.
Condition occasionally with a leather balm to maintain flexibility.
Avoid prolonged soaking in salt water.
Store flat or hanging when not in use.
Over time, the leather will develop a natural patina unique to your dog’s life, not wear, but history.
