Affirmations From Your Dog

Your dog already thinks you’re doing great.

Which is useful, because the rest of the world can occasionally make things feel… less certain.

Dogs don’t really care how productive you were today… Or whether you answered that email properly… Or if your life plan is on track.

They care that you came home. That you said “walk?” in an interesting tone.
That you accidentally dropped cheese on the kitchen floor.
That you exist, generally.

Living with a dog means regularly being reminded of things we forget about ourselves.
Like:

  • You don’t have to earn rest.
  • You’re allowed to take up space on the couch.
  • Going outside helps.
  • Being excited about small things is still a good way to live.
  • Most people are nicer than you think.
  • A bad day can improve significantly after a walk and a snack.

Dogs also have an impressive ability to move on.

One second they’re deeply offended you left the house without them. The next they’ve forgiven you completely because you picked up a tennis ball.

Maybe that’s why being around dogs feels so grounding.

They don’t spend much time questioning whether they’re lovable, interesting, successful enough or falling behind.

They just assume they belong here.

And after a while, some of that starts rubbing off on us too.
