333 Blankets for Winter

We often joke about wanting to swap places with our dogs. We see them stretched out in a patch of winter sun and think, "must be nice." But that's not the reality for all dogs.

While many of us spend winter negotiating blanket space with the dogs in our homes, there are dogs sleeping outside through bitterly cold nights. There are also people doing extraordinary work to care for them.

This winter, we wanted to do something simple.
So we worked together to make blankets.
333 of them, to be exact.

Not because blankets solve everything. They don't. But because sometimes a practical thing can also be a meaningful thing. A little more warmth on a cold night and a reminder that people care.

Why blankets?

We wanted to create something very Chommies. Something thoughtfully designed and functional. Something made to last. Blankets felt like it checked all our boxes.

Why wool?

Each blanket is made from 100% sheep's wool.

Wool is naturally insulating, breathable and durable. It keeps dogs warm even in cold, damp conditions and stands up to repeated use. It's also easy to wash and dries quickly, making it practical for kennels, shelters and everyday dog care.

Just as importantly, it has a natural end-of-life. When a blanket has lived a long and useful life, it can be returned to the earth.

No microplastics, synthetic fibres or unnecessary waste. Just warmth, from beginning to end.

A community effort

The 333 blankets made this winter have been made possible with the support of our community.

Donations received last year have been matched by Chommies to help us reach our goal, allowing more blankets to find their way to dogs who need them most.

And this isn't where it ends.

From now on, blanket donations are available online and in-store. For every blanket donation made, Chommies will match it with another blanket.

A simple idea, but one we hope will create many more warm spots in the years to come.

Not a charity moment. A community one.

The people caring for dogs every day are the real heart of this initiative.
The kennel teams cleaning, feeding and showing up every morning.
The rescuers making room for one more dog.
The community carers who quietly do the work because the dogs need them.
 
We're simply adding another layer of warmth to what already exists.
 
Over the coming weeks, these 333 blankets will find their way across Cape Town and into the hands of the people who need them.
